I'm Robin and I'm 47 years old. I think you'll agree when you see my picture on the right that I look pretty good for my age. That's new - two years ago I weighed 210lb and I was a complete mess.

I suffered from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and had the early stages of diabetes too.

How's your diet?

If you have high blood pressure problems like me then it's really important to keep a close eye on what you eat.

Even though my blood pressure readings are now never higher than 125 / 75 I still count myself as having high blood pressure problems. From my point of view it's a bit like being an alcoholic. Yes - I'm under control at present but it would be oh so easy just to slip backwards into problems again.

With the help of Frank Mangano I've worked really hard to sort myself out and there's no way I'm about to slip backwards.

Fruit and vegetables do help reduce your blood pressure but they're only part of the big picture. You need to strike a balance and it's important to get the right amounts of the correct kind of vegetables - and to avoid certain kinds or types of fruit.

I now have fruit or vegetables every day but the amount varies and I just work it to fit in with how things are going otherwise that day.

I have to be honest and say that I focussed my efforts mostly on the stuff in Frank's Blood Pressure Secrets pack and there wasn't too much focus on herbs or herbal treatments.

But I've been asked a lot since so - for the sake of all you blog readers out there - here's my brief list of herbs that have been shown to reduce your blood pressure levels.

Actually, I forgot .... I did use one herbal supplement called Lycomato - a powerful tomato extract that helped me when I first started on my blood pressure reduction program. Now that I'm slimmer and more active I find that I don't really need it any more.

Anyways .... here's the list:

  • Arjuna Bark
  • Black Cumin Seeds
  • Forskolin
  • Garlic
  • Maitake

Now - I ain't gonna pretend I'm any sort of expert on this because I'm not. Garlic is a fairly obvious one on the list and you can get it from any pharmacy or even from the supermarket as an odorless capsule. As for the others I'm not so sure but if you want to try then best go see a herbal specialist or do some google checking.

I had great fun a few months ago in an old second hand book shop near to where I live.

I sat with a huge mug of coffee ( I know, I know - not good for the old BP is it ...) in the medical and health section of the store. I found two wonderful old mothers help type books from the 1940's and chuckled for hours at the stuff I found.

I now know how to make a bread poultice for back ache or a chest infection - and I also know that if you heat up salt in a saucepan and put it in an old sock it can make a good heat pad for a neck or shoulder strain.

Home remedies are great fun - particularly the old ones. But sad to say there was nothing in either book about home remedies for high blood pressure problems.

Guess we just need to stick to the diet, salt reduction and stuff.

Hey - maybe this site will become a source of the home remedies of the future.

I'm always intruigued when I read these kind of articles in the newspapers.

Horsetail extract is a new chinese herb approach to lowering blood pressure -well, not new exactly because I'm sure it's been around for hundreds of years - but newly promoted for blood pressure problems to us western types.

As always with these kind of products the hard science research doesn't seem to be there but the anecdotal reports are good.

Not sure if I would try it myself - it's just me but I'm always a bit concerned about the side effects of this kind of treatment. You read so much about so called harmless herb preparations turning out to be a major problem - albeit only for a few.

Potassium and Blood Pressure

Doctors have found that increasing the levels of potassium in your diet can help to lower blood pressure.

I've heard this before and it was a part of the strategy that Frank Mangano taught me when I managed to sort out my high blood pressure using natural methods.

I figure that there's a balance between sodium and potassium. Sodium is bad for your blood pressure levels and will cause your blood pressure to go up. Having a low potassium level aggravates the sodium content and causes worse problems. So .... sort out your potassium and the sodium problem goes away.

Strange then isn't it that many of the drugs used for blood pressure will tend to deplete the body of potassium ..... hmmmhh !

Makes you think - doesn't it.

Go natural for blood pressure control - that's what I say.

Can depression affect blood pressure?

When I was "at my worst" as I like to call the time when I was nearly double my ideal weight and I teetered around each day on the verge of a stroke or heart attack - I often felt low and depressed.

I guess it was related to my self esteem and my body image - and probably to lack of exercise - because I've since discovered that regular exercise is a great way to lift my mood. I've even seen lots of research to show that exercise can help treat and prevent depression.

But can depression affect blood pressure?

Well, my blood pressure was high and I was certainly depressed but I'm not sure if the two are related - at least in my own case.

I've been reading a lot about blood pressure since I had my own problems - pretty much everything I can get my hands on actually - and I've seen stuff saying that high stress or anxiety levels can cause the blood pressure levels to go up. Maybe that's why they call it "hyper" "tension" !
But I don't recall reading anything actually about depression causing blood pressure problems or depression making high blood pressure worse.

It's funny the questions you get asked when you start a blog and your friends learn what subjects interest or inspire you.

Jesse - a friend of my sister Lesley - asked me today if I'd ever heard of using Holly Berry treatment for lowering high blood pressure.

To be honest I hadn't but I made a promise to try to find out. In truth - I'm passing this on to you guys out there. Have you heard of it? Tried it?

Even with natural blood pressure treatment there are so many possibilities that its nearly impossible to keep up with them all.

The best advice I can give for lowering blood pressure without drugs or medications is this: walk more, lose weight, reduce salt in the diet, reduce fat in the diet, take extra calcium and extra potassium and then add a few well researched supplements and vitamins. You should also buy yourself an automatic blood pressure monitor and use it regularly at home - without one there's no way to know if the changes you are making are the right ones for you.

There are lots of good natural cures that have a good track record and good research behind them. Stick to those before you branch out too far into left field.

Just my view of course but it seems to work for me
